Dido awoke the following morning to find the fire still slumbering, and Aeneas’s brawny arms wrapped around her. At some point in the night, she had rolled her cloak into a pillow, and Aeneas’s larger cloak was covering both of them as a blanket. She closed her eyes and basked in the glow. Acerbas had slept by her side every night of their marriage, but she had never felt as intimate with him as she did now with Aeneas. She pulled back and looked at him, his long eyelashes hiding those dark eyes, his warrior’s torso tense even in sleep.

If only this moment could last forever, she wished, even as she heard the calls from the search party outside the cave.

“Dido,” she heard loudest, a light, girlish voice. Anna had found them. She supposed that she should try to cover up, or at least feel ashamed of their nakedness. Next to her, Aeneas sat up, woken by the cries. He stretched and yawned, and turned to her as though he would say something. She never discovered what it was. At that moment Anna ran into the cave and embraced her, congratulating her loudly on her marriage. Dido looked at Aeneas and saw his dark eyes flash with anger. He understood everything, she thought, panicked. But he said nothing.
